Leelanau is a county as well as a peninsula located in northern lower Michigan. It is defined by hundreds of miles of sandy beaches and harbors, this "northern paradise" stretches more than 31 miles at its widest, and is surrounded by Lake Michigan on its west and Grand Traverse Bay on its east. Water, Water, Everywhere
Eight percent of the total surface of Leelanau is water. That's equal to 29.5 square miles! There are 98 miles of Great Lakes Shoreline in the county.
Leelanau has 142 fresh water inland lakes and ponds, plus 58 miles of streams. These offer some of the best resources for water sports anywhere in the country.
Recreation
The area's recreation is unsurpassed. You can enjoy biking, world class golf, beautiful beaches, and cross country and downhill skiing.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Park features hiking and nature trails in addition to a great dunes hill climb.
